Week 38 – Florida Pt. 2

Hi Friends.

We have had a busy week in Florida since leaving Miami. Not so much due to us traveling, but moreso with our work lives. As I mentioned last week, Travis got a new job that has been keeping him pretty busy, which is so good to see. He’s really liking it so far. For myself, I’ve completely revamped my website and have gotten more work freelancing. Additionally, I’ve been working hard at finally marketing my own services and building a network online, so it’s definitely been keeping me pretty busy.

Speaking of which – I’m planning on moving my travel blog to a different website, that will host all of our travel recaps, travel tips, and once we are back in a house – I’d like to do more recipes and food specific things. If you have any recommendations at all for names for a food/travel blog – I’m all ears!

Even though we were busy with work a lot of this past week, we also got to do plenty of fun things. Our main areas of focus was Lake Worth, Titusville, and St. Augustine.

Lake Worth
Lake Worth was our first stop on our way out of Miami. We came here specifically because we wanted to visit with some friends and former co-workers of Travis’s from the Cycling Sports Group days. Megan and Joe moved down to Florida a few years ago with their dog, Chico, who we always refer to as “the goodest of boys.” Chico is a very sweet old man at 15 years of age. He’s slowed down a bit since we last seen him, but he’s love-able as always. Chico means the world to us and we were so glad we were able to see him while visiting with Megan and Joe. It was so fun being able to see Chico meet our good boy, Pepper Jack. They got along great together. It’s fun to see Pepper Jack interact with other dogs at their house. We had no idea that our pup loves to steal other dogs beds when they’re not in it. He loves to snooze and will always try to find the coziest surface to relax on so it shouldn’t of come as too much of a surprise for us.

We hung out with Megan and Joe for the evening while enjoying some food from Bolay, which was so fresh and good. For those who don’t live in Florida, it’s essentially a place where you can make your bowl of food with a base of greens or grains, and then top with veggies, proteins, etc. It was so delicious – I wish they had more locations around the country!

Titusville
Titusville was supposed to be a quick stop on our way to St. Augustine, but we ended up spending a few days in the area. For one, we had found an amazing spot to work and park from during our days. It was a quiet area, right by the water, and we actually got decent internet reception. There were people kite surfing & windsurfing around the water, and plenty of other people in camper vans around us. It felt cool to be part of the community.

We ended up finding this spot because we randomly learned that a rocket was supposed to be launched from Cape Canaveral and we wanted to get a good spot to watch it launch. We were so excited to see it happen, but unfortunately it kept getting delayed due to bad weather. The wind was a bit strong and the skies were a bit cloudy, so its understandable why they’d want to delay it and try again. I wonder if that happens often.

Regardless it was cool to be standing around with a group of other people that came out specifically for the launch. We saw a bunch of cool set ups and all kinds of people came out. It felt cool to be part of a community for a moment there.

St. Augustine
St. Augustine is somewhere I’ve been looking forward to going to for a while. Travis had been there before and mentioned it was a nice little city. We were also excited to meet up with my parents there. We had to get a few things from them and give them back something, so instead of us having to ship things back, they decided to meet us for a weekend. It was only a few hours, and they like St. Augustine as well, so it ended up working out perfectly.

While the weather was a bit cold for Florida, it ended up being so nice and a great visit. My parents hotel was right near the beach, and we were able to park in the parking lot of their hotel. Thankfully the beach was pet friendly and we were able to let Pepper Jack run and get plenty of exercise in the morning.

We explored the downtown area, which was beautiful. There were still Christmas lights everywhere, which was so pretty to see. Tons of shops and restaurants everywhere and streets that were blocked off so you can just walk in the middle of them.

Travis and I got to do some touristy things which we haven’t done in a while, so it was fun. I also didn’t know much about St. Augustine so it was interesting to get to learn a bit more about the city. We went to the old jail museum, the fountain of youth park, and Castillo de San Marcos. They were all really interesting in their own ways, but I think the fort – Castillo de San Marcos was my favorite thing to see. Mainly be cause we have been to a few forts around the states and it’s interesting to see how they differ from each other.

As everyone knows, I’m a huge foodie and love going out to eat, so here were the places we went out that I would highly recommend checking out if you’re in the city.

Two awesome places I highly recommend checking out for food & drinks:

San Sebastián Winery
This place is not only dog friendly, it has an amazing rooftop bar area. We got lunch & some wine here, as well as some of the best key lime pie we’ve ever had. It’s huge though – so definitely split it with someone if you come here!
Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille
We went here with my parents before saying goodbye to them. The seafood is absolutely delicious, but dessert was to die for. We split an order of oreo beignets and they were to die for.

What’s Next?
We will be making our way across the panhandle of Florida before making our way to New Orleans area over the next few weeks. We decided to travel along the gulf coast, as it’ll be a bit warmer for us in the van.

Thanks for reading.
