Weeks 25 & 26: Northern Virginia

Hi Friends.

As I’ve mentioned before, we are starting to go at a slower pace, especially throughout the holiday season. We spent the last two weeks in northern Virginia, and honestly it was a nice to be back in a familiar place for a little while. Not only did we get to meet up with some friends that live in the area (and visit with some friends that happened to be passing through area at the same time!), we also got to get some appointments and things out of the way. While we love being on the road and checking out new areas, there’s something really nice about not having to use a GPS for a few days, and actually know where we are going.

Almost every day during week 25, we went to a dog park of some sort. It was awesome getting to go back to our favorite dog park, as well as check out a few new places with one of my friends and her dog. One of these places was called Bark Social, a great place located in North Bethesda where you can go and hang out with a drink or food while all of the dogs get to run and play with each other. Pepper Jack had a blast and absolutely loved it. He’s not the type of dog to be running around crazy for hours on end typically, but at Bark Social he was nonstop.

On one of our weekend days, Travis and I split up for half of the day to do our own things. He took Pepper Jack and went to go hang out with one of his college friends in Alexandria, while I went to hang out with a few of my high school friends. We went out to dinner before doing a ghost tour, the night before Halloween. I’m a huge fan of ghost tours in general and have never done one in Alexandria. It was awesome. I’ve always loved ghost tours because not only are the stories fun, but you also get to learn quite a bit about wherever you are as well. We walked through the streets of Alexandria, learning about what it used to be like hundreds of years ago. It was also awesome to see some of these gorgeous brick townhomes completely decorated for Halloween.

Over the weekend, we visited with another friend from Connecticut who happened to be passing by the area. While our original plan was to go back to Bluemont Vineyard, they changed their hours that day and were closing right after we got there. We asked one of the workers if they had any recommendations for us for a dog friendly place nearby. This is how we ended up at Bear Chase Brewing Company. It was only 5 minutes away from the winery and still had an amazing view. They had fire pits set up, plenty of chairs, as well as a great outdoor patio.

When the weekend was over, we were trying to decide where we wanted to go next. We ended up spending a few days in Richmond before hitting Williamsburg and Newport News. We spent more time in each of these places than originally thought in order to miss a huge storm that was heading right for the coast. Richmond was really cool, but I was most excited about going to Williamsburg. It’s where I went frequently on vacations with my family as a kid, but it’s been a long time since being back. I hoped it would be just as great as I remembered it. Luckily, it was. We walked through the shops, down through Colonial Williamsburg, explored the College of William and Mary’s campus, and went out to a botanical garden area. Travis was able to find some trails to go mountain biking, and we found a great area to go hiking just a little further east in Newport News.

We had a really great couple of weeks in Virginia. It’s honestly becoming one of my favorite states. I love how your environment changes drastically depending on where you are in the state and all of it is absolutely beautiful. Next up we are heading to the Outer Banks of North Carolina before heading down to Wilmington, and then into South Carolina.

Thanks for reading.
